Sharon Dempsey Memorial Pool officially opens for the summer

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – The Sharon Dempsey Memorial Pool is splashing into the summer as they officially open for the summer.

The Sharon Dempsey Memorial Pool may be reopening, but it could be a few weeks before it becomes fully operational. The main pool and the kiddy pool will be open, but pool workers are still operating on the bridge and some steps that lead to the waterslide.

Sharon Dempsey Memorial Pool Manger, Ashleigh Brammer told 59News why it’s important for the facility to open even without the use of the waterslide. “A lot of our people that come here, they walk from the different housing developments that are right around here. Others have families that will drive them here, others do not. It’s the type of community we live in, so that’s why we really pushed to get this as clean as it can, as good as we can run it, and just go with what we got.”

As they wait for the waterslide to open, customers will have access to new cabanas at the pool and there will also be a new lifeguard stand.

To make up for the waterslide being closed, the pool held diving competitions and other fun games for customers to have some fun competition. The winners were either given a free pass to the pool or something from the concession stand.

Even though the pool is opening later than most other local pools, pool workers hope to make this a summer to remember.

“We are really excited. Our last pool day, we had the Back-to-School Summer Bash. We’ll have that again this year,” said Brammer. “We’re hoping to have a couple more different little events to have. We’ve thrown at the idea about a movie night and throwing a movie up and swimming at night.”

The pool will be open throughout the summer from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays.
