SURVEYOR, WV (WVNS) — Since their introduction on West Virginia in 2022, Almost Heaven swings have popped up across the state. As of Monday afternoon, June 10, 2024, Raleigh County can finally claim its first one.

    New artwork brightens up Beckley

Lake Stephens in Beckley boasts many things, a pristine mountain lake, beautiful freshwater beach, and most importantly a stunning scenic view.

That is why Lake Stephens was chosen as the site of Raleigh County’s first and so far only Almost Heaven swing.

Unveiled Monday afternoon, the swing sits atop the Main Overlook in the park.

Molly Williams, Executive Director for Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Authority, said this is a very special occasion.

“We are so honored to be the first for an Almost Heaven West Virginia swing here at Lake Stephens. All the other swings are at amazing places throughout the state, and we’re honored to be included in those other places as being a great place to visit. As you can see, this view here is phenomenal and we’re excited to be able to share it with others.” said Williams.

The newest of the now 22 swings, the swing at Lake Stephens offers a beautiful view of the lake proper.

The main criteria for placing one of these swings is one of West Virginia’s Most Instagramable Views.

Denise Southern, Membership Development Director for the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce agreed the view is worth it.

“It’s wonderful that we have this one in Raleigh County. You have a perfect view of the lake when you’re swinging and I think it’ll be a great tourist attraction.” said Southern.

And tourism is what the swings aim for.

West Virginia Tourism began a hashtag campaign for the swings back in 2022 and now people everywhere can find them by searching for #Almost Heaven.

Lisa Strader, Executive Director of Visit Southern West Virginia said the opportunity for tourism impact is high.

“People really truly enjoy it. And there are people who are literally, just like the Waterfall Trail, you know they’re going waterfall to waterfall, to check in, they are going swing to swing to take that photo.” said Strader.

The closest swings to the new one at Lake Stephens are located in Summers, Fayette, and Mercer counties.
