Mountains help some but temps soar into the upper 80s with feel like temps in the 90s

Monday a mostly sunny day will see clouds building into the afternoon. Highs still running well above average nearing the 90 degree mark. The mountains will fall just shy but a few south and west of Beckley certainly have a good shot at crossing the 90 degree line if the sunshine holds over the building clouds.
Heat and humidity driven thunderstorms are possible in the early evening but fade as the night progresses. Slow moving, these storms could produce locally heavy rainfall leading to ponding and runoff issues. Watch for high water in poor drainage areas.
Tonight storms rain themselves out and we quiet down. It’ll be a steamy, stuffy night with lows in the upper 60s. Certainly an AC night. Watch for runoff to drain for those traveling late at night.
Tuesday a partly sunny day once again features building clouds into the afternoon as heat and humidity driven showers and thunderstorms are back in the forecast. Temps still manage the low 90s but those that see showers will notice a drop in temps. After the rain ends, sunshine will return providing the overly humid feel that comes with quick summer downpours. Showers fade into the overnight hours as our cold front passes with lows in the balmy low to mid 60s.
Wednesday our potential heat wave continues with highs in the 90s and high humidity. Heat index, what it feels like, will rise into the upper 90s nearing 100. In this heat it is important to keep yourself safe and avoid outdoor activities from 10am to 4pm as much as possible. Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and keep an eye on you and those around for you heat exhaustion and heat stroke signs. An afternoon pop up shower or rumble of thunder is likely with very heavy rainfall. After the rain ends, humidity levels will be running high enough to cause health concerns for those with pre-existing conditions.
Thursday is the same with highs in the 90s and high humidity. Another day to take care of yourself and those in your life that struggle with the heat. Check on neighbors and friends. While sunny for much of the day, afternoon pop up downpours and thunderstorms come with the heat and humid air-mass.
Friday is another scorcher with highs racing into the low 90s with feel like temps in the mid to upper 90s. High humidity will lead to poor air quality which will affect those with breathing issues and other pre-existing conditions. Monitor your health closely if spending anytime outside from 10am – 4pm and take breaks when overheated.
Saturday a few isolated showers and storms are possible which will keep temps in the upper 80s. It won’t matter much as we still hang onto the high humidity making it feel much warmer than what the thermometers read. Showers and storms fade into the night leaving us steamy into Sunday morning.
Sunday better chances of showers with afternoon storms. Temps will fall shy of 90 with the building of afternoon thunderstorms. Still, high humidity will lead to it feeling hotter with heavy downpours likely into the evening.
In your extended forecast summer begins Thursday and the summer heat is already here. The first weekend of summer and beyond is looking to live up to the name with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s with little in the way of relief from the heat any time soon. Eyes will be on the drought conditions as we remain relatively dry over the next several days. No widespread rain chances in the near future.
