BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – People made their way to Harry Lewin Field in Beckley for some baseball on Saturday, July 13th.

A ceremony was held to honor a Vietnam Veteran and the founder of the ABO baseball league. Alternative Baseball gives those who are 15 or older who have special needs a chance to play the sport.

On Saturday, July 13th, the Mianeers and the Bluefield Rail Birds faced off on the diamond.

Taylor Duncan, Founder of Alternative Baseball, expressed that ABO is not just about playing the game, but it uses the game for a bigger purpose.

“We are an organization that doesn’t just play baseball. We’re also using the game of baseball as an instrument for community change, for community awareness of what those with disabilities can accomplish when they are given the opportunity to go out there and try,” said Duncan to 59News.

Duncan said it is about the friendships formed and life skills.
