Fort Western celebrates Independence Day with tours and a barbecue
AUGUSTA (WGME) - Old Fort Western in Augusta celebrated Independence Day by giving tours of the National Landmark and hosting a barbecue by the picnic tables outside the fort. WGME got a private tour from Greg Edwards of Bowdoin, that included the supply house and a dining room where at different times in our colonial past Paul Revere, Aaron Burr and Benedict Arnold stopped to eat.

Beginning at the State House, the parade made its way through the streets, ending at Old Fort Western. The parade featured superheroes, go-karts, and dance routines.

BARRYVILLE, New York (WGME) -- A Maine man, who was listed as a missing person in a national law enforcement database, has been shot by a state trooper in New York. Around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, state police responded to a report of a suspicious person in a vehicle outside a business in Barryville, New York.

Maine groups receive funds to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River
More than a dozen environmental improvement projects are now being funded through a settlement to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River. In addition to remediation, the 2022 agreement also requires Mallinckrodt US LLC, the former owner of the closed HoltraChem facility, to pay $20 million for various projects, including land conservation, a recreational boat launch facility in Orrington, and a fishway at the Frankfort Dam.
