Despite ‘Done Deal,’ the Bellaire Bridge Still Stands Unsafely and Unsoundly
That’s what the director of public works and development for the City of Benwood – David McLaughlin – thinks of the ongoing debacle involving the still-standing Bellaire Toll Bridge, a span closed more than 30 years ago that is losing bits and pieces of debris to the Ohio River and the streets below it.

It was a done deal, or so they thought in Benwood. As Benwood’s public works director David McLaughlin explained recently on River Talk radio, he and Police Chief Frank Longwell attended a meeting back in late winter 2023 during which a $3 million deal was struck with the Governor’s Office. The money was to come out of the Governor’s contingency fund, and finally, the people of Benwood would be rid of the nightmare that’s haunted them for decades.
Barton-Blaine Road bridge reopens
BELMONT COUNTY, OHIO (WTRF) – Things are about to get a little bit easier for motorists in Belmont County. Lauren Borell with the Ohio Department of Transportation tells 7NEWS that the Barton-Blaine Road bridge has reopened. This is the bridge located next to the Blaine Viaduct, which was just recently closed to all westbound traffic.

Main Street paving in Wheeling nears completion
WHEELING, W.Va. — The paving of Main Street in downtown Wheeling is closer to the finish line now that that asphalt has been laid on the left lane. Workers began paving Main Street nearly a month ago. There were setbacks that interfered with the goal of finishing it in 2 weeks.
