    Urgent Investigation Launched as Strong Sulfur Smell Engulfs Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON - Bellingham Fire Department are currently responding to numerous reports of a sulfur-like smell that has been detected across Bellingham, primarily originating from the Southside and extending through downtown. The origin of the odor remains unidentified, despite thorough investigations by local emergency responders and Cascade Natural Gas.

    Initial inspections have revealed no unusual readings on detection devices, leaving the cause of the odor a mystery. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities actively working to determine the source. Residents are advised that emergency crews are already on the scene, and additional 911 calls regarding the general odor are unnecessary at this time.

    However, officials urge residents to remain vigilant. If you detect the smell of natural gas inside your home or accidentally strike a gas line while digging, it is crucial to immediately contact 911 and Cascade Natural Gas. Safety precautions are paramount as authorities continue their efforts to resolve the situation swiftly and safely.

    Local residents have taken to social media, sharing their experiences of the smell across various neighborhoods. C.G reported encountering the strong odor off Bennett Drive, describing it as “like a punch to the face” when she stepped outside. Other reports have come in from areas such as Fairhaven, Smith Road, and Zuanich Point Park, highlighting the widespread nature of the incident.

    People as far as Lynden also got a strong whiff of that sulfur-like odor while crossing the Nooksack Bridge on Guide Meridian into Lynden.

    Some residents speculated on possible causes, with theories ranging from a collapsed coal mine tunnel under the bay to potential seismic or volcanic activity. However, these remain unconfirmed as officials continue their investigation.
