“Iowa GOP delegate observing national convention as professor, too” (Radio Iowa) Jeff Taylor, a political science professor at Dordt University in Sioux Center, was also a delegate at the GOP’s national convention in 2012. “Not only do I get new stories from this one, but the students are probably going to be able to relate to this experience a little more just because it’s happening right now,” Taylor said, with a laugh. “This fall and next year and the following year this is still going to be fresh in their mind.”
Wachholtz and Ballard honored by Governor for volunteerism
Paula Wachholtz of Panora and Cathy Ballard of Guthrie Center were honored June 25 during the annual Iowa 2024 Governor’s Volunteer Awards ceremony. The two were among more than 400 Iowans similarly honored. This was the 40thyear of the awards program. Individuals and groups were honored, and length of service awards were also given.
DNR Studying Ways to Increase Deer Population in Southwest Iowa
(Lewis) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources hosted several public meetings on the importance of managing the deer herd. John Lorenzen from the DNR Office in Lewis says some areas of the state, including southwest Iowa, currently show a significant drop in the deer herd needed to satisfy deer hunters.
Tree companies swamped following derecho in Des Moines area
URBANDALE, Iowa — In the Karen Acres neighborhood tree trucks and utility trucks rumble down the streets. Piles of branches line the streets, waiting to be picked up. “Non-stop text and phone calls nonstop all day and night,” said Tim Roney, of RR Tree Service. Roney recently retired from a job in an auto repair shop. Now he, and son Adam, are hard at work getting branches off of rooftops. Roney tells people the truth when it comes to how soon he can get to him.
Unsettled weather to continue through early next week, slightly warmer and more humid as well
The weather has varied decently from one side of the viewing area to the other today. We’ve seen more sunshine and warmer temperatures closer to Rochester, with more cloud cover, cooler temperatures and rain near Mason City. This will continue to be the trend through the remainder of this afternoon, with gradual clearing this evening as the sun sets and we loose the daytime destabilization that has helped kick these showers off.
New Venue For Dubuque Arts Council Summer Concerts Announced
According to the Telegraph Herald, the Dubuque Arts Council has announced a new venue for its Music in the Gardens concert series in 2025. Beginning next year, the concerts series name will be Music at the Star and will take place at the Aliant Energy Amphitheater located in front of the Star Brewery in the Port of Dubuque area.
Spencer Schools Shifting 500 Students To Other District Buildings
Spencer, Iowa – One of Spencer’s school buildings won’t be opening this fall due to flood damage and about 500 third, fourth and fifth graders who would have been starting school at Lincoln Elementary next month will attend classes in other buildings in the district. Carroll County Supervisors Delay Land Gift To City Of Halbur For Trail Development Pending Clarification On Agreement

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors is considering a gift of county-owned land to the City of Halbur for potential trail development. The board hosted a public hearing during its July 15 meeting regarding the property transfer and did not receive any comments from the public opposed to the county handing over the half-mile stretch of land just on the west side of Halbur. The supervisors were supportive of the move, but Board Chair Stephanie Haumsan and District 3 Supervisor Gene Meiners wanted clarification on whether the county had first right of refusal.
