North Carolina K-9 declared as surplus after ‘aggressive’ behavior without handler

BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A K-9 with the Belmont Police Department has been declared surplus, due to its behavior after its handler left the department.

On Monday night, the Belmont City Council approved that the city could find a new home for Rogue instead of being assigned to another officer. According to a recommendation from police, the dog has “a history of aggression towards everyone” but his former handler, with a history of “unauthorized dog bites.”

Belmont Chief Boyce Falls has been reaching out to organizations that specialize in handling challenging K-9s for a potential donation. As of now, Rogue has been discharged from his duties as a service dog.

The item passed as part of the Consent Agenda with no further discussion.
