    PREPS: Hononegah's Owen West competes at IHSA Swim State Championships

    WESTMONT, Ill. — Hononegah senior Owen West capped off his prep career in the aquatic facility that all Illinois High School swimmers hope to end up: the FMC Natatorium.

    West had qualified for the IHSA Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships after winning the backstroke at the Byron sectional with a time of 53.76 seconds.

    The Indian swam a time of 54.24 seconds in the preliminary round at the state meet, but it wasn’t enough to send him into the finals. He placed 35th.

    Hinsdale Central won the team championship after accumulating 337.50 points while New Trier was second with 210.50. Freeport finished 37th with 12 points.

    • HONONEGAH BOYS INDOOR MEET: The Indians boys indoor track and field team hosted their second meet of the season at the fieldhouse on the campus of Hononegah High School and walked away with several strong results.

    Gavin Brady got the ball rolling for the Indians as he finished seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.33 seconds) and teammate Cristian Lobato took 10th (7.35). In the 400, Chase Cutler grabbed second (55.16) and Coen Lee placed third (56.55).

    Lee also had a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.81), where Jack Ginter finished 10th (10.05). Ben Cooper was fourth in the 800 (2:06.78) while Camden Juno grabbed seventh (2:08.44). Alex Bartch was second in the 1600 (4:33.31) and Landon Samuelson placed third in the 3200 (9:49.48).

    Hononegah’s 4x400 relay of Anthony Otero, Mitchell Meichtry, Matthew Mahan and Lobato finished first (3:41.86) while the 4x800 team of Jacob Wright, Derek Peterson, Oliver Filimonov and Jayden Philbee placed third (9:40.36).

    In the field events, Jacob Benson had a third-place finish in the shot put (14.80 meters) and John McKenzie was eighth (12.21). Logan Wilson ended fourth in the high jump (5-feet, 7-inches).

    Jake McLarty won the pole vault for the Indians (12-2.00), Spencer Paterson was third (10-2.00) and Cooper was eighth (8-8.00).

    • ROCKFORD AUBURN GIRLS INVITATIONAL: The Indians finished eighth as a team in Saturday’s indoor meet.

    Hononegah’s senior duo of Amelia Bronnimann and Emma Krenz continued to dominate the pole vault as Bronnimann finished first with a distance of 2.90 meters while Krenz was second with 2.45.

    Sophia Hedges took second in the 400 with a PR of 1:03.47 while Keila Borges Aragon recorded a personal-best and finished third in the 800 (2:33.50), where Lauren Frake took seventh (2:36.27).
