JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Illinois College rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie Beloit College and went on to win 9-8 in 10 innings Sunday at Joe Brooks Field.

Saturday, the Buccaneers split a double-header, dropping the opening game 8-3, but rolling to a 20-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Bucs slipped to 17-9 overall and 10-5 in Midwest Conference action after dropping 2-of-3 to the Blueboys (17-11, 4-8).

Beloit starter Kaiya Nishino worked 4 2-3 innings Sunday, allowing five hits and one unearned run. Harvey Pena came on to close out the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the eighth when he allowed a run.

Beloit still led 6-2 and got two runs back in the top of the ninth to take an 8-2 lead.

The Blueboys’ leadoff man in the ninth reached on an error and a double followed. Pena then walked the next two batters to force in a run for an 8-3 lead. Jack Alport came on in relief and got an out on a fielder’s choice with another run scoring to make it 8-4.

Louie Bartletti’s RBI double made it 8-5 and Nolan Decker’s sacrifice fly closed the gap to 8-6.

Connor Hennemann’s double scored Bartletti to make it a one-run game at 8-7. An error by the shortstop allowed the tying run to score before a groundout ended the inning.

The Bucs threatened in the 10th as Alport walked and O’Leary hit a double to left to send him to third. Connor Vogel grounded out to third with Alport holding. Elijah Love struck out and Evan Zenger grounded out to end the inning.

Brayden Weaver drew a walk from Alport leading off the 10th. The Blueboys executed a sacrifice bunt and the next batter walked. Adam Passmore then reached on an error by the right fielder allowing the winning run to score.

Beloit finished the game with four errors and lost despite outhitting IC 13-10. Brett Kiger had a huge game for the Bucs, going 4-for-5 with two home runs to give him 13 for the spring. He drove in three. Myles Souza also homered and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

SATURDAY: In game one, IC starter Jack McGuire (3-1) outdueled Beloit ace Aiden Phipps (5-2). McGuire went seven strong innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six. Phipps allowed nine hits and four runs in six innings.

McGuire retired the first six Bucs before JT Tamburini ripped a solo home run for a 1-0 lead. The Bucs added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Vogel for a 2-0 advantage.

IC scored a run in the fourth and Bartletti hit a homer to tie the game in the fifth. Beloit went back on top in the sixth on a solo shot by Kiger.

That was Beloit’s final run. Passmore’s two-run double in the sixth put IC ahead to stay.

The Bucs left the bases loaded in the ninth.

That didn’t happen often in the nightcap as Beloit banged out 15 hits against seven IC pitchers.

The Bucs led 6-1 after the second inning, 8-2 after the fourth and put up a 10-spot in the fifth for an 18-1 lead.

O’Leary was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Blake Nelson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a homer and six RBIs. Vogel was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs and Kiger was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.
