Will Tim Lester’s Hawkeye Offense “Scratch Where it Itches?”
I have never been this excited for one aspect of Iowa Hawkeye Football than I am right now. It feels like 100 years ago that Hayden Fry. had the boys slinging the pigskin around Kinnick Stadium with ease. Kirk (now just slow down with that talk about offense) Ferentz is never going to be a coach who wants to air the ball out, but hiring Tim Lester is a step in the right direction. The boys still have to block, throw, catch, and run, but the past number of years have felt like the Hawks were playing 11 on 14. Everything looked difficult. Flush that stinky stuff. Statistics can paint any picture you want them to, but the Hawks were doing paint-by-numbers while the rest of college football was studying Picasso, Dali, and some other people I don’t recall, but I’m sure they were pretty dang good. I put together the grid below based on last year’s squads. There are a number of different players (although Illinois State returns its top six tacklers) and some different coaches, but a year’s worth of data is something.
