EWSD summer meals program expands reach to rural communities
ESSEX WESTFORD SCHOOL DISTRICT — With almost a decade under its belt, the EWSD summer meals program is expanding outside of Essex. With two locations in Essex at Little Ones University and the Maple Street Park concessions stand, the summer meals program provides healthy breakfast and lunch free of charge to children ages 18 and under.

Knights of Columbus help celebrate the 150th anniversary Mass at St. Peter’s Church
On June 30, 2024, the Knights of Columbus Vergennes Council 3664 and the St. Albans Assembly 1149 helped celebrate the 150th anniversary Mass of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, Vermont on the feast day of St. Peter and Paul. Bishop-elect of Burlington John McDermott celebrated the Mass. Musicians from many different parishes came to participate in a seven-member brass ensemble and choir. A link of the chain that held St. Peter in prison in Rome was present and on display at the altar for veneration to celebrate. After the Mass, there was a social gathering amongst the Church community.
Ludlow Fire Chief Peter Kolenda retires after 25 years of service
LUDLOW, Vt. – Retiring Ludlow Fire Chief Peter Kolenda waved as he exited the Ludlow Fire Station on Sunday, June 30, at 12 p.m. Kolenda was being honored with a boisterous “escort home,” sirens blaring and lights flashing in celebration of the chief’s last day on the job. Kolenda recently announced his retirement from the department, after serving the town for 25 years.

Of Vermont rejoiced with Deacon Luan Tran, a native of Vietnam, as he was ordained a transitional deacon June 1 at The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Burlington. The special Mass, celebrated by Hartford Archbishop Christopher Coyne, former bishop of Burlington, was live streamed so dozens of Deacon Tran’s family members and friends could join in the celebration from Vietnam.
Welch joins groundbreaking for Bay Ridge neighborhood project, new affordable housing in Shelburne
Welch secured federal funding for the project in 2024 . VermontBiz U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today joined the Champlain Housing Trust (CHT), local leaders and organizations in celebrating the groundbreaking of the Bay Ridge neighborhood project, which will provide 94 new permanently affordable homes including 68 affordable apartments for rent developed by the CHT. Sen. Welch nominated and secured federal funding for the project through the FY24 Congressional Directed Spending (CDS) process.
Retiring Chief Gowans Honored by City Council: District Heat Rates Stay the Same
Montpelier Mayor Jack McCullough gave the key to the city to retiring Montpelier Fire Chief Robert Gowans on June 26. Gowans announced his retirement earlier this year after 45 years with the fire department, which began July 12, 1979. Gowans was promoted to Lieutenant in 1996, and then to deputy fire chief in 2008. He became fire chief on May 1, 2011. Gowans also graduated from Montpelier High School in 1975 and then served in the United States Navy.

Search for missing man underway in Malletts Bay
COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) - Search and rescue crews are looking for a missing man Wednesday morning in Lake Champlain. Colchester Police say crews are searching in the Malletts Bay area for a man in his 30s who they say wasn’t able to make it back to his inflatable raft. Officials say he was swimming with his kids and using the raft. They say one of the kids went into distress and the man assisted the child back to the raft but he did not make it back on.
After a year, Shaw’s reopens in Ludlow
The flood of July 2023 devastated many local communities; among them Ludlow suffered greatly. Now, nearly a year later, Shaw’s supermarket celebrated it grand reopening Friday, June 28, at 9 a.m. at it’s downtown store located at 213 Main Street. Having lost all its inventory and sustained significant damage the parking lot, which has been eerily empty for 11 months was full to capacity, with many residents, town officials, Shaw’s employees, and members of the Okemo Valley Chamber of Commerce in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony — and for the reopened shopping.
