The decision to flee from the sheriff didn’t work out for a Windsor man Friday.

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin saw a Windsor man operating a vehicle and knew the suspect — Linard Earl Outlaw — had outstanding warrants.

The sheriff attempted to stop the vehicle Outlaw was driving; the latter fled, even driving through a field before abandoning his vehicle.

The suspect ran into a residence and barricaded himself in a bedroom, according to authorities.

After an hour-long standoff, Outlaw was taken into custody without further incident.

Outlaw, 49, was charged with felony larceny from the person, interfering with emergency communications, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, assault on a female, resisting a public officer, injury to crops and a probation violation.

The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Windsor Police Department, the N.C. Highway Patrol and DEDVCTF.
