EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Police have charged a contractor after he allegedly scammed a man of over $17,000 after not completing work on his house.

According to the Salem Township Police, the victim came into the police station in January of 2024 around 7:00 p.m. to report that he hired a contractor and paid for work that was not completed.

Court documents state the victim signed an agreement in August of 2023 with 51-year-old Timothy Hoffman with H & F Family Contracting to build a porch and replace a roof on his property in Berwick for over $23,000.

The victim tells police he gave Hoffman a check for $11,850 for him to start the job then Hoffman requested another 25% which is $5,950, from the victim to start working, investigators said.

As mentioned in the criminal complaint shortly after Hoffman received the second check he poured a concrete slab in front of the victim’s residence and never returned.

The victim attempted to reach Hoffman but received no response including hiring an attorney who sent several certified letters to Hoffman requesting a refund for the services that were not received, as stated in the court documents.

As of July 2024, Hoffman has not returned the funds or honored the contract created in 2023, police noted.
