Butler, Pa. ( WJET/WFXP ) — Police have released the identity of the man in the attempted assassination of Former President Donald Trump.

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, PA. Bethel Park is about 8 miles South of Pittsburgh. Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper after Crooks opened fire on Trump, hitting him in the ear and killing one spectator. According to state records, Crooks was a registered Republican.

At this time, the FAA has shut down the airspace surrounding Bethel Park effective immediately citing security reasons.

The shooting is being treated as an attempted assassination. It remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

According to Trump campaign officials, former president Donald Trump is “fine.” Trump landed in Newark, New Jersey just before 1 a.m.

The Secret Service said one rally attendee was killed and two were critically injured. All three victims are adult males, police said.

A video posted to social media and geolocated by the AP shows the body of a person wearing gray camouflage lying motionless on the roof of a building at AGR International Inc., a manufacturing plant just north of the Butler Farm Show grounds where Trump’s rally was held. Law enforcement said that they had recovered what they are calling an “AR-style rifle” from the scene.

What we know about Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspected Trump rally shooter

The roof where the person lay was less than 150 meters (164 yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. For reference, 150 meters is the distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M-16 rifle.

President Joe Biden said Saturday that “everybody must condemn” the suspected assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Addressing the nation about two hours after the shooting, Biden said he was relieved that Trump is reportedly “doing well.” He said he had been unable to reach Trump before his remarks, but the White House said he did speak to Trump several hours later.

“We cannot allow this to be happening,” Biden said. “The idea that there’s violence in America like this is just unheard of.”
