BETTERTON — The Kent County Spartans is a non-profit organization for the development of youth in the game of football.

On June 19, when the heat was rising, the Spartans took over Betterton Beach, as good Spartans should.

According to the Spartans Facebook post, ages 9, 11, and 13 up were invited to train.

On the sand, beside the Sassafras River, more than a dozen youths showed their dedication.

They practiced footwork, how to move as a blocker and catch a long pass after executing a slant route pattern. They bear-crawled and sprinted, too, while more than a few beachgoers watched the enthusiastic youngsters.

The coaches were encouraging, using their years of experience to demonstrate how to properly play the game.

It’s paid off too. During their spring season the three age groups combined for a record of 17-1. 8 and up 6-0,10 and up 6-0 and 12 and up 5-1.

“You want to win, don’t you?” said coach Karl Perkins to his players. “You all know how it’s done. Let’s get it!”

About 100 youth will be ready for the fall season, added Ian Wilson, president of the team.

The public is encouraged to further support the Spartans at their second annual cornhole fundraiser at the Elk’s Lodge 2474 in Chestertown, on Saturday, noon. All proceeds go to KC Spartans.
