Maine State Police are investigating the death of a baby five days after it was found unresponsive in a Biddeford home in June.

Biddeford police and fire departments were called to an address on Emery Street at about 11 a.m. on June 15 for an unresponsive 1-month-old boy, Maine State Police said in a news release.

The infant was brought to Southern Maine Hospital and later transferred to the Maine Medical Center. The child died on June 20, according to police.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy the next day. As of Wednesday, police were withholding the cause and manner of death.

The Biddeford Police Department and the state police Major Crimes Unit South are working together on the investigation, according to state police. Because of the age of the child, an investigation is standard protocol, state police said.

The first public report of the infant’s death was on Wednesday in a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety. Spokesperson Shannon Moss said the gap of almost two weeks between the death and public notification was based on the specifics of the case.

“Every investigation is different,” Moss said. “We have reasons for what we do and don’t release at any given time. The priorities are the integrity of the investigation and the victims.”
