BIG LAKE — Two teens were killed and a third was critically injured during a single-car crash early this morning on Highway 25 in Big Lake, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The three 17-year-old boys involved were all from Elk River, and have not been identified by authorities.

According to the accident report, a Big Lake Police Department officer traveling south on Highway 25 around 2:45 a.m. Saturday observed a speeding BMW going northbound near Tarrytown Road.

The police officer turned around in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle for a speeding violation, but instead came upon a devastating crash scene, the patrol said.

The 2011 BMW 535 had reportedly left the roadway to the right and rolled, the accident report states.

The driver and one passenger were killed, while a second passenger was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis with life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.

All three of the teens were wearing their seat belts and road conditions were dry at the time, the MSP said.

It is unknown whether alcohol was involved, the report states.

Members of the Big Lake Police Department, Big Lake Fire Department, CentraCare Ambulance, Sherburne County Sheriff's Office and Becker Police Department all responded to the scene.

    The crash remains under investigation.
