FISHER COUNTY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A skunk has tested positive for rabies in Fisher County.

Fisher County officials say the skunk was involved in an encounter with domestic dogs Sunday, February 4.

The skunk was sent to a laboratory for testing after the encounter, and results came back positive for rabies February 7.

Texas Department of State Health Services is now monitoring the situation and has been in contact with anyone who may have been affected by this encounter.

Health authorities say residents and visitors in the affected area should take the following precautions:

    • Do not pick up or handle any stray or wild animal.
    • Enjoy wildlife from a distance! Do not attempt to feed, approach, or touch wild animals.
    • Teach children about the dangers of stray and wild animals.
    • DO NOT kill healthy appearing animals merely due to this warning.
    • If your pets or livestock are behaving strangely, contact your veterinarian immediately.
    • Make sure all of your pets and livestock are vaccinated against rabies.
    • Report any animal bites and/or scratches to your health care provider or to the Fisher County Sheriff’s Office so we may send medical attention to your location and/or contact the appropriate health department authorities.
    • Contact the Fisher County Sheriff’s Office and/or the Texas Department of State Health Services to report animals you believe may be affected by rabies.
