ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – The Taylor County Expo Center will soon feature new additions to the West Texas Fair & Rodeo, in addition to the cherished traditions that visitors anticipate each year.

The Taylor County Expo Center has seen a significant increase in events since its renovation in 2021. With the expansions, the Expo Center can now host a greater variety of events more frequently. The West Texas Fair & Rodeo is one of the biggest events at the Taylor County Expo Center, bringing in millions of dollars in revenue for the Abilene community. General Manager Rochelle Johnson is excited to introduce new entertainment elements to this year’s fair and rodeo.

“We’ve got a strolling DJ that’ll be there, and I think everybody’s going to be interested in seeing as well as a strolling piano player as well. They’ll be moving around the fairgrounds, so that’s going to be something new,” Johnson shared.

The Fair and Rodeo will feature the same exciting entertainment that has kept fans coming back to the Expo Center from all over. Additionally, a concert series will take place, providing even more incentives for fans in the coming year.

“We’ve partnered with the Potosi Live and Screaming Goats Enterprises, so we’re going to have five paid concerts in the coliseum during the West Texas Fair and Rodeo. We’ll have Cody, Canada, Stoney LaRue, Paul Wall, who’s a rapper, and there’s two other ones,” Johnson shared.

The changes in entertainment aren’t the only ones coming to the Expo Center. Last year, the Expo Center experienced a tragedy when a young bronc rider was killed while participating in a competition. Due to this incident, Johnson has stipulated that they will be limiting risk at Expo Center events in the future.

“We had added that Ranch Bronc riding to add some more entertainment during the rodeo. The rules that that event is governed under are probably a little looser than we would care to be a part of. Our rodeo committee has made the decision not to have that this year,” Johnson said.

The West Texas Fair & Rodeo is scheduled from September 5th to September 14th, and tickets can be purchased on the expo center website.
