ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — Back-to-school time involves school supply shopping, and with the economy’s rising costs, the price can become a burden for families. Local organizations are helping ease the burden with school supply drives.

A warm welcome to the Big Country: Navigating your first days at school

The Big Country Chapter of Communities in Schools and Mission Abilene will receive supplies from KRBC’s ‘Tools for Schools’ drive. Justin Whiteley, the director of community and resource partnerships, said having the supplies on the first day is a game-changer for students.

“The first thing you hear from your teacher is everybody gets out your notebooks and pencils, and they don’t have them. So, students, their first day of school, a lot of times is a lot of anxiety,” Whiteley said.

Whiteley also noted that when there are multiple kids in a household, the cost adds up, causing stress on the family. The nonprofit strives to make time for students’ success and also give the community a chance to support them.

“It’s a small investment that shows that you care. I love it when people come and say, ‘Hey, I just love kids so how can we help?’ They just give. Abilene is a community of giving, and we can always count on our members enabling when it comes to stepping up to the plate,” Whitley said.

The Tools for School drive is scheduled for Friday, August 9th at Walmart’s south location. Our team will be at the Walmart on Southwest Drive from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., collecting supplies for students at our local schools.
