How reliable is the Farmers Almanac?

BIG COUNTRY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – If you’ve ever looked up what winter might be like in Texas, you’ve probably noticed that the Farmers’ Almanac is a popular go-to source. People often prefer it over more technical sources like the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) or the National Weather Service (NWS) because its predictions are more straightforward and easier to understand.

The Farmers’ Almanac has been published every September since 1972 and is the oldest continuously published periodical in North America. In addition to its popular weather forecasts and seasonal predictions, it includes information on astronomical phenomena, sunrise and sunset times, tide schedules, and agricultural advice for farmers. But how accurate are their predictions?

Drought conditions continue to worsen across the Big Country

While the Almanac provides detailed long-range weather forecasts that help people plan vacations, decide on crop planting, and prepare for winter, its accuracy is somewhat mixed. Some sources, like Climavision, a weather forecasting developer, claim an 80% accuracy rate, but the Almanac itself reported only a 64% success rate for last year’s winter forecasts. The Almanac’s predictions are based on historical data and proprietary methods, like analyzing the number of sunspots and their ability to warm the earth. In contrast, meteorologists use a range of complex models and current data, such as ENSO phases, to predict weather.

One key difference is that the Farmers’ Almanac publishes its forecasts annually, which means it can’t adjust or correct its predictions throughout the year because it is a physical book. In contrast, scientists can update their forecasts as new data becomes available, providing a more accurate and timely understanding of upcoming weather conditions. This has been important as hurricane seasons fluctuate from year to year, and snowstorms come and go up north.

While the Farmers’ Almanac offers an appealing forecast that gives you the overall big picture, its accuracy can vary and often falls short compared to modern meteorologists’ dynamic and data-driven approaches. For those seeking reliable and up-to-date weather information, especially for planning significant events or activities, it’s wise to consult multiple sources and consider the latest scientific forecasts alongside traditional almanac predictions, or turn on your local news channel and watch your meteorologist as they try to keep you up to date on the latest weather!
