Roughly 8,000 Birmingham City School students are unregistered for this school year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) —  In exactly a week, Birmingham City School students will return to class.

According to the school system, there are about 8,000 students who have yet to be registered.

School officials remind parents and guardians that registration support is available at the Lincoln Professional Development Center. The center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At Princeton Alternative Elementary School, Principal Bruce Jackson said all his students are registered and ready to return to class next week

From new window treatment to new books, Princeton’s 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year Dorine James wants to make sure her classroom is ready for the first day.

“I really enjoy starting a new chapter, getting to know them, building a community within the classroom,” James said. “That’s my favorite part every year.”

James, who is also the mother of a first-grader, offered advice for parents on how to help their kids prepare for next week. She says implementing a bedtime and getting enough rest helps children transition to a daily routine that starts at 7:45 a.m.
