Kewanee Continues Recovery Efforts after Tornadoes Lat Week
The City of Kewanee continues to work on storm recovery from two tornadoes that struck a large part of Kewanee last week. There will be no landscape waste collection today, July 22, 2024. If your trash was not collected last week, and you need it emptied before your next collection day, call city hall at 309-852-2611. Trash and recycling collection resumes the normal schedule this week. If you live in the construction area near Central School, the city is collecting trash in this area before 6 AM. Today, July 22nd is an emergency burn day, and burn day rules apply. The city is not taking addresses for brush cleanup. The City of Kewanee is encouraging residents to take the brush to the old hospital property. The city will eventually collect brush at residential addresses, but they can’t guarantee when that will occur.
Kewanee Residents May Experience Rusty Water During Rural Fire
The Kewanee Community Fire Department is battling a structure fire in the area of Route 91 and E 2850 Street, with mutual aid from Galva/Bishop hill fire, Toulon Fire, Bradford Fire, and Wyoming Fire. The Community Fire Department is using a fire hydrant near Americ Inn and Super 8, which may cause rusty water for residents in the area. No boil order has been issued and the water is safe for use but residents should take precautions until water runs clear. If you experience rusty water, you are advised to run cold water until the water runs clear to avoid drawing rust into your water heater.

Wake Up Tri-Counties with Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore
Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to discuss the Kewanee City Council Meeting from Monday night. Three of the agenda items were for the Kewanee Fire Department. The council approved the lowest bidder for construction to fix the door frame at Fire Station #2 after a fire truck struck the center support while backing into the building. During the process of identifying work needed where the roof partially caved in, they discovered a few areas that were not properly constructed on the roof. There was a separate agenda item for the roof replacement because only part of the roof would be covered by insurance. Porter Brothers was approved as the contractor to do the updates to Francis Park under the OSLAD grant.
Kewanee Park District Parks Remain Closed from Tree Damage by Tornadoes
The Kewanee Park District announced that Windmont, Chautauqua, and Baker Park Pleasure Drive remain closed due to heavy tree damage from the two tornadoes that struck Kewanee last week. “We are working with our insurance and local tree companies to return the parks to operating condition. However, it will take time as our partners are still trying to remove trees from houses, garages, driveways, etc… around Kewanee. We have asked them to focus on the residents in need and then rotate to us. Our maintenance team is working hard to clean up and also maintain the parks. We appreciate everyone’s understanding in this difficult time for our community. Thank you all for the support.” Baker Park Golf Course was able to reopen thanks to community members who showed up to help last week.
