BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Kids in North Dakota won’t be back in class for another month, but one early education center is receiving a few million dollars to help pay for their programs.

Bismarck Public Schools is receiving just over $2.1 million from the Department of Health and Human Services for its Head Start programs.

The money will be used at BECEP, or Bismarck Early Childhood Education Program, mainly to cover paying its more than 100 staffers.

Things to do around town: July 8-14

Head Start is one of six programs offered at BECEP, the center also offers early childhood special ed.

“I staff all of my Head Start classrooms with one teacher and two teacher assistants or paraprofessionals or aides, they are all interchangeable for us,” said BECEP Head Start Coordinator Amanda Carlson. “And so a bulk of that money goes towards staff to make sure that I can create learning opportunities that are safe and healthy for the students that attend our program.”

Kids and teachers in Bismarck public schools start class on August 21. BECEP, meanwhile, won’t start until August 22.
