BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Nine years ago, Amy Jo Johnson was just another resident in Bismarck, however, while traveling through the country, she was impressed by the amount of free, family-friendly activities major cities across America offered, and wanted Bismarck to be another such city.

Speaking with her close friend, Rhonda Styles-Rohde, the dynamic duo decided to team up to create Family Day Riverwalk.

Recruiting a team to get permits, entertainment, vendors, and more, Johnson and Rohde created something special at Sertoma Park. But the Riverwalk from years ago is not the same Riverwalk today, now boasting close to 40 vendors and about 2,000 attendees.

7 free ways to beat the heat and boredom

Riverwalk is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, offering families free games, activities, food, and a chance to connect with local businesses in the community.

From getting a chance to pet puppies to hearing a story from Miss Sparkles, there’s something for kids of every age.

At the end of the day, when families are full of good food and great memories, a prize is drawn that can be picked up at the Bismarck Parks and Recreation office.

Johnson and Rohde don’t make a dime from the event, donating all the proceeds to Parks and Recreation.

This year, Family Day Riverwalk was able to donate $2,000 to Parks and Recreation to ensure that North Dakota’s greatest features — its parks — remain beautiful.
