Which U.S. industries have the highest turnover rates?

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Every year, people in every career leave their jobs in search of new ones. In many cases, this is simply due to people seeking new opportunities in their field — but other ideas, such as low pay, a lack of appreciation, or poor management may also lead to individuals quitting. And as one might expect, for one reason or another, some industries are facing this problem more than others.
As part of a study on job turnovers across the country, law firm Schmidt & Clark analyzed resignations from early 2024 as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and determined the average number of resignations for many of America’s most occupied industries. When these numbers were compared to one another, it was revealed that leisure, hospitality, trade, manufacturing, and construction, among other industries, featured extremely high quit rates.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the mining and logging industries report the lowest rates of turnover (almost seven hundred times lower than Leisure and Hospitality’s quit rate), rivaled only by federal jobs. Other careers, including private education, finance, and wholesale trade, also showcase lower-than-average statistics when compared to the top ten.
“According to research,” states a spokesperson from Schmidt & Clark, “20% of workers consider quitting their roles in America every day. With this in mind, business leaders must consider the reasons why people are contemplating resigning, including burnout, lack of progression, and fewer pay rises. This campaign has highlighted the industries most at risk in 2024, with leisure and hospitality taking the top spot, suggesting that relevant leaders within this industry, such as hotel managers, should take the time to examine workplace culture in the last half of the year.”
