Another former prep baseball standout from Southwestern Indiana has been taken in the annual MLB Draft.

Indiana University right-handed pitcher and Jasper High School graduate Connor Foley was chosen Monday afternoon by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round with the 164th overall pick. The selection has a slot value of $392,300.

Foley is the fifth Wildcat to be drafted and the first since Neil Giesler in 2003. He has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining if he chooses not to sign with Arizona.

Foley started in 14 games on the mound as a sophomore this spring for the Hoosiers, going 4-2 with a 4.71 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 63 innings.

He previously was a critical figure in Jasper winning the Class 4A state championship in 2021 and was named the Courier & Press All-Southwestern Indiana Player of the Year the next spring as a senior when he was first-team All-Southern Indiana Athletic Conference for batting .436 with 12 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs. He also posted a 1.55 ERA over 54 innings of work on the mound with 86 strikeouts. Foley twice earned All-State baseball honors and also played basketball and football.

Recent Evansville-area draftees include Southridge's Colson Montgomery and North's Cameron Decker, who were selected by the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively, in 2022. Montgomery is the 16th-ranked MLB prospect and played in the All-Star Futures game in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday.
