Penobscot Narrows Bridge suicide prevention barrier project delayed
PROSPECT -- A project to build suicide prevention barriers along the Penobscot Narrows bridge has been delayed. Paul Merrill with the Maine Department of Transportation says they devised a plan to begin construction on the barriers after finishing a lighting project on the bridge. That lighting project is now complete. However, due to the design of the barrier project, engineers have determined they need to perform a wind tunnel test with digital and physical models to ensure the overall safety of the bridge.
Plans for new bridge safety barrier delayed
The state transportation department said wind-tunnel testing needs to be done before a suicide-prevention barrier is installed on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge near Bucksport. Transportation Department spokesman Paul Merrill said engineers want to determine how the bridge would react to wind with the addition of a fence. "We want to make sure whatever we put on there is not going to change the functionality of the bridge," he said.
YMCA recognizes community at anniversary event
BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island community came out to celebrate the YMCA’s 125th Anniversary at a gala event last Thursday at The Bar Harbor Club. The gathering began with cocktails and a silent auction on the terrace and a curated display by the Bar Harbor Historical Society of MDI YMCA memorabilia, then moved to a buffet dinner interspersed with insights from guest speakers, reflections by the YMCA’s award recipients and a paddle raise to support a few of the Y’s programs, most notably the new endowment MacLeod Fund, to support free swim lessons and water safety for all five-year-old children and scholarship for summer day camp.
Ask residents about Glen Mary pool
I really appreciate that [the town of Bar Harbor is] willing to help fix the Glen Mary pool, but have you thought about what the families in the neighborhood want for our community pool? I am Vivian Axtell, I’m 11 and I have lived on Glen Mary Road my whole life. I’ve been swimming in the Glen Mary pool my whole life, until the pipes broke. I was so sad when the pool broke. When I found out that I couldn’t swim in the pool, I made a sign that said “please save our favorite pool” in big bright colors. My grandma, Janice Lowe, showed me what your proposed pool was going to look like after the construction was done. I don’t understand why we need three pathways to get into the pool area. And why make the deepest spot in the pool only two feet deep? Why spend a million dollars or whatever amount it is, on a very expensive splash pad, and not make the pool deeper and pay for one or two lifeguards?
