EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene-Springfield branch of the NAACP celebrated an historic anniversary on Monday morning at the historic Mims House in Eugene. Seventy-five years ago, the Lane County government began demolition of the ‘Across the Bridge’ community, which was located across the Ferry Street Bridge and where Alton Baker Park is presently, which was where African-American families were forced to live outside of Eugene city limits and in poor conditions. This discrimination happened, despite tens of thousands of African Americans being recruited to Oregon to support World War II efforts.
Springfield man arrested on several warrants after police chase, OSP says
EUGENE, Ore. – A Springfield man was jailed Sunday evening after allegedly speeding off when Oregon State Police tried to pull him over, state police said. According to Oregon State Police, at about 4:20 p.m. on July 21, troopers spotted a vehicle violating traffic laws near Delta Highway and Beltline and attempted to pull it over. OSP said the driver of the vehicle did not pull over and sped off along Beltline, and OSP troopers gave chase. Eventually, the driver exited onto Coburg Road, pulled into a parking lot, and ran away on foot, OSP said.
