BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) – One local church is offering a summer program to get kids off the couch and help them make summer memories.

15th annual Hoops Drills and Life Skills Basketball Camp offers kids a great start to summer

Calvary United Holy Church of Bluefield is accepting middle and high school students into their after school program.

So far, the program went to Bowen Field for a picnic, some fun games, and community service.

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024 the program sought to inspire kids by visiting Gary Bowling’s House of Art. Not only do they take fun trips with the program, but students also get to learn more about themselves through reading and writing.

Volunteer teacher, Didra Smith, told 59News how this program helps middle and high school students.

“Some of them do get summer jobs and then you have a lot that aren’t doing anything at all,” said Smith. “We’re trying to remove them somewhat away from devices and TV and let them know there’s a whole world out there to explore.”

The program will also see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at the Historic Granada Theater on Thursday, June 27, 2024.
