New Bedford Day in Fort Myers, Florida Faces Big Changes
For 20 years, New Bedford snowbirds who winter in sunny Florida and those who've moved there permanently have gathered in Fort Myers to celebrate their hometown. New Bedford Day was founded in 2004 by former New Bedford Mayor Brian J. Lawler and his wife Johan. The Lawlers, recognizing the benefits of bringing hundreds of former New Bedfordites together to reminisce and renew old acquaintances, designated the second Tuesday in March as New Bedford Day.

Three years after breaking ground, the long-anticipated, 18-acre St. Regis Longboat Key Resort is opening on Wednesday, Aug. 14. After it opens, the public can access the St. Regis spa, which has a snow shower (seriously!) and any one of its seven restaurants and bars. But there won't be any day passes to enjoy the pools, which include a winding river, a resort swimming pool, a serenity pool and a fully stocked saltwater lagoon teeming with tropical wildlife. Access to those amenities will require a membership that can be purchased online, unless you’re checking into the hotel for a luxurious stay.

Lightning strike sparks 4-acre brush fire at Cape Coral's Charlotte Harbor Buffer Preserve
CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Cape Coral firefighters battled a 4-acre brush fire at the Charlotte Harbor Buffer Preserve Saturday afternoon. According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, at around 1:40 p.m., crews responded to the scene off Burnt Store Road N., where the flames were reportedly caused by a lightning strike.
