The first fishing derby was held July 5, 2014, and on July 6, nearly 10 years to the day after the inaugural derby, the St. James Fishing Club welcomed another 148 kids to its annual holiday event on a muggy Saturday morning that included plenty of action.

Cape Fear Foodie: Hot Dog Road Trip Part 4
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - What better day to celebrate our local hot dogs, than on National Hot Dog Day? My thoughts exactly. Then again, how is that we are already through the middle of July and we’re just now going on our first Hot Dog Road Trip of the summer? It’s truly shameful on my end. But we’re all here now, the gas tank is full, the 100 CD holder is bursting at the seams, and the AC is struggling to keep up in this unrelenting heat...so let’s put rubber on the road.

Oak Island’s 2024 turtle season is off to a slow start, but those familiar with the annual visitors know Mother Nature can change things in a hurry. Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program (OISTPP), an all-volunteer nonprofit, registered the first nest – of not only its season but the state’s – on May 6, and as of June 28 had reported 47 totals finds so far in 2024, all loggerheads. OISTPP co-coordinator Suzan Bell said the current number of nests is lining with up with 2020, when there were a total of 96 for the year. OITC has reported more than 100 nests every year since.

Port City Foodies Newsletter: It's a newsy, meat-and-potatoes week in Wilmington
Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. Writing about restaurant openings and closings is a part of my job covering the Wilmington-area food scene. In recent years, I’ve noticed there are fewer of the area’s classic seafood restaurants. Turns out, others have noticed, too -- including some of the longtime restaurateurs in the home base of coastal North Carolina’s signature style of seafood. You can read...
Winds affect offshore fishing, red snapper season
While much of the last week has been windier than we would like, we’ll put up with some extra summer wind if it brings some rain with it. Before this latest round of rain, much of the Cape Fear area was classified as being in moderate drought and a few areas were a step worse in extreme drought. The numbers aren’t in yet on exactly how much the latest rains helped alleviate our rain shortage, but there’s no doubt it helped. Several folks commented they were glad the downpours held off until after the Fourth of July celebration and that might be okay, but we’re sure glad it didn’t wait any longer.
