‘Chicken man’ wanted in theft of more than $12,000 in chicken from Food Lion stores, deputies say
A man accused of stealing chicken from a Food Lion store in Spartanburg County may have also stolen more than $12,000 worth of chicken from numerous Food Lion stores in North Carolina.

Fire in the Pines Festival to return Oct. 5 with education, food trucks, games and more
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The annual Fire in the Pines Festival is set to return to Halyburton Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. The family-friendly environmental education festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of fire to forests in southeastern North Carolina and helping people learn the need for controlled burns.

Women’s Soccer Signs Charlotte Transfer
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW women's soccer Head Coach Chris Neal has announced the addition of Charlotte transfer Ayanna Parker to the program for the 2024 season. Parker, a 5-4 forward, made 35 appearances over the previous two seasons for the 49ers. "Ayanna is a dangerous attacker and a great addition to our squad," said Neal. "I feel her strengths are really made for our style of play. We are excited to have her in the Hawk's Nest for the upcoming season." Japan’s HI-CHEW Maker Morinaga Investing Over $136 Million In NC Factory
The Mebane, NC produces the popular fruity candy HI-CHEW. Due to high demand, Morinaga will add manufacturing space and production lines. A performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help facilitate the expansion, contingent on a company capital investment of $115.4 million, the creation of 40 jobs, and local government support.
NC’s Population Surge and Increasing Diversity
North Carolina, especially the Raleigh metro area, is witnessing rapid population growth. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that The Triangle has seen one of the largest increases in retirement-age residents nationwide since the pandemic. The number of retirement-age residents has soared by 18.3 percent in Raleigh and over 15 percent in Durham since 2020, nearly doubling the national growth rate.
Oak Island: Sand for sale at a bargain price
The Army Corp of Engineers offered Oak Island Town Council a deal last month that it couldn’t pass up. As part of its bi-annual dredging of the Wilmington Harbor Inner Ocean Bar, the Corps will have access to a lot of sand, something Oak Island can’t get enough of in recent years. That project is scheduled to go out for bid in September and Oak Island was presented an opportunity to purchase some of the sand for bargain prices.
Adams provides Oak Island's financial update
Oak Island Town Council approved a contract earlier this month with a Whiteville accounting firm to conduct an audit of what turned out to be a successful fiscal year. Prior to its vote, Interim Town Manager Kathryn Adams provided council with a financial rundown of the past fiscal year at the board’s July 9 meeting, highlighting key aspects of a productive 12 months. Fiscal year 2023-24 ended June 30 and Adams said the town did very well with its tax collection rate, paid parking program and debt management. Oak Island received an additional $7.3 million in FEMA grant reimbursements and is expecting to receive more money from the agency soon.
