North Carolina man sentenced in 2020 South Boston attack

BOSTON, May 28, 2024 – Suffolk Superior Court Judge Michael Doolin today sentenced GLEN MUMFORD, 57, of North Carolina to two-and-a-half to three years in state prison on an assault with intent to rape charge and two years’ probation on an assault and battery charge stemming from a 2020 South Boston attack on a female victim.

Mumford was convicted by a jury on Friday.

At about 5:50 a.m. on December 8, 2020, a resident of the Old Colony housing project called 911 to report that a woman was screaming for help in a basement hallway. Two officers responded and heard gargled breathing and heavy moans. The officers saw Mumford face down, moving his body up and down in a manner consistent with copulation. When the officers identified themselves, Mumford rose to his knees to reveal a woman beneath him. The woman was unconscious and naked from the waist down. She appeared to be choking on blood flowing from her nose and mouth. The victim, who had freshly broken teeth and bleeding gums, regained consciousness and stated, “I was screaming for help, he tried to kill me.”

The victim told police she had met Mumford earlier at the Andrew Square MBTA station.

Prosecutors asked for a prison sentence of seven to nine years.

“This man deserves every minute of his sentence for an attack that left a woman choking on her own blood and shattered the early-morning peace in a public housing development. I thank everyone involved for putting together the facts that led to a strong case, and I thank the jurors for their sound verdict,” Hayden said.
