MLB insider points to Boston Red Sox pulling off franchise-altering blockbuster trade

Boston Red Sox fans have grown tired of their inactivity on the MLB trade market in recent years. For many in Boston, it’s one of the primary reasons that they have missed out on the playoffs four of the past five seasons.

Primarily, the frustration is over an ownership group that has been unwilling to keep up with the big boys when it comes to Boston’s payroll.

    Could that soon change?

Boston heads into MLB games today with a 43-37 record and right in the midst of the American League Playoff race.

Sure, Boston is eight games behind the rival New York Yankees in the AL East and seven games behind the second place Baltimore Orioles. But making a win-now move ahead of the MLB trade deadline later this summer makes the most sense.

We also have somewhat of an update on this. A rather interesting update.

MLB insider floats Pete Alonso as a possibility for the Boston Red Sox

“If Boston continues this run and goes into July in full command of a playoff spot, the Red Sox absolutely should be placing a call to the Mets to gauge the possibility of getting Alonso.

Even though first baseman Triston Casas is expected back in early July, the Red Sox have gotten a sub-.300 weighted on-base average from the DH position. Which, regardless of the size of Masataka Yoshida’s contract, is worth addressing via upgrades like the one Alonso would provide.”

Alonso’s name has obviously been floated about due to the New York Mets’ struggles earlier this season. However things are a bit complicated in this regard following a strong recent run from New York.

The Mets have won 15 of their past 19 games and currently sit at 39-39, firmly in the National League Playoff race. Will owner Steve Cohen sign off on an Alonso trade if the Mets remain in playoff contention? His status as an impending free agent also complicates things in that regard.

This latest report is interesting in that we were hearing the Red Sox might employ a controversial strategy ahead of the trade deadline. That is to say, both buying and selling.

“At this stage, as well as they’re playing and as interesting as they are, I would expect that they will buy. They may do two things at once, they can trade some of their potential free agents perhaps and bring in other players.”

A lot of this will be dictated by what happens in the coming weeks. Boston’s three-game set against the Yankees in New York shortly after July 4 coupled with another home series against the Pinstripes immediately ahead of the deadline could tell us the story here.
