Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers

Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez once famously referred to the New York Yankees as his " daddy ." But 20 years later, another Boston Red Sox star may soon have the long-time rival saying the same to him.

On Sunday night, third baseman Rafael Devers continued to own New York in a 3-0 Red Sox win in front of a national audience. Boston's slugger homered for the second consecutive game, smacking two solo shots in Yankee Stadium.

Devers opened the scoring after six scoreless innings, taking Yankees starter Luis Gil deep to left-center field in the seventh to make it 1-0 in favor of the Red Sox.

Then, in the ninth inning, with Boston nursing a slim 2-0 advantage, Devers offered a little breathing room, hitting his second bomb of the night.

This season, Devers has tagged the Yankees for three home runs and eight RBI in only six games. In this weekend's series alone, he went 5-for-12 with three long balls and four RBI.

The All-Star third baseman's big performance helped the Red Sox pull to within 3.5 games of the Yankees (55-37) and keep pace with the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles (57-33).

Devers now has 28 career home runs against the Yankees, five more than his second-most frequent victim, the Toronto Blue Jays. Meanwhile, his 71 RBI versus the men in pinstripes are tied with those same Blue Jays for his most against any team.

Following the Red Sox victory over the Yankees, the 27-year-old Devers is slashing .293/.378/.593 with 21 home runs and 55 RBI. Rightfully, Devers was among the reserves selected to represent the American League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.

It's Devers' third All-Star nod, which puts him in some elite company. Since 1980, he is only the second Red Sox player to earn three trips to the Midsummer Classic while winning two or more Silver Slugger awards before turning 28, joining only Mookie Betts.
