How Jayson Tatum never spends a single cent of his NBA salary: "We had a deal before I got drafted…that we have to live off endorsements"

Jayson Tatum is a proud ' mama's boy .' Having grown up primarily with her, Tatum is close to his mother Brandy Cole, whom he once called his best friend. That's why it wasn't a surprise that when it came to his finances, the Celtics' star appointed his mom to oversee his bank accounts.

According to Brandy, JT is a guy who likes to buy expensive items like watches. And because everything related to money matters passes through her, she knows everything about Jayson's transactions.

"I'm the one who processes the wires and gets receipts and then insures everything, and stuff like that," revealed Brandy. "I can tell from his face when he walks into my office that there's about to be a wire. It's just this expression on his face andI know exactly what it means that 'I need to send someone some money.' He's already picked something out. And sometimes the price makes me say 'What does this watch do?' And he's like 'But it's not the Celtic money.'"

    Live off endorsements

Brandy was supposed to go to the University of Tennessee on a full athletic scholarship being a star volleyball player in high school. However, just weeks after she graduated from high school, she found out she was pregnant with Jayson. So she ended up attending a local college to earn a degree.

While studying, she had to work part-time jobs to help pay for her studies and of course, raising the young JT. Because of this tough time in their lives, mother and son agreed to be prudent with the potential money Jayson would earn in the NBA.

"So we had a deal before I got drafted that I couldn't spend the money I make from the Celtics, that we have to live off endorsements. And her and my accountant agreed. They didn't know that I would make as much as I did off the court. So in my mind, I gotta spend that money. All that money got to go. I got to enjoy it," added Jayson.

Tatum signs the largest contract in NBA history

Earlier this month, the now 26-year-old Tatum agreed to a five-year $314 million super-max extension with the Boston Celtics which is the biggest contract in NBA history. The deal overtakes his buddy Jaylen Brown who inked a $285 million contract last summer.

JT's new deal starts at $54.1 million during the 2025-26 NBA season and will increase to $70.1 million during the 2029-30 campaign if Tatum picks up his player option. The C's superstar will become the first player to earn a $300 million deal in the NBA and the first to earn an annual salary of at least $70 million.

A close examination of the deal , however, revealed that JT will make a net amount of around $25.2 million after deductions from the contract's average salary of $62.8 million. But while the deductions, most notably the federal tax, are ridiculous, it's nice to save $25 million a year by living off of endorsements alone.
