Report: Alex Cora, Red Sox agree to three-year extension

The Boston Red Sox and manager Alex Cora, one of the best in the sport, have agreed to a three-year extension, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman was the first to report Wednesday.

This comes roughly an hour after ESPN MLB insiders Jeff Passan and Jon Heyman reported that the two sides were engaged in recent talks for an extension, with the possibility of him being the second-highest-paid manager in the sport behind only Chicago’s Craig Counsell .

This is massive news for Boston, who’s vastly outplayed their preseason expectation of being the worst team in the AL East. It has done quite a good job closing the gap on the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees for the AL East lead, though it still rests six games back at 54-46.

A huge part of that has been Cora, managing his tail off with the bullpen while simultaneously empowering, motivating and, well, managing the current talent within the organization. He’s the head honcho; he’s the straw that’s stirred the drink.

Alex Cora Wants The Red Sox To Make Some Moves

He’s done a great job helping develop Ceddanne Rafaela , Wilyer Abreu and All-Stars Jarren Duran and Tanner Houck , among others. He’s also done a great job empowering superstar third baseman Rafael Devers , who’s grown immensely under Cora’s watch.

In six seasons with the Red Sox, Cora’s 494-416 with one pennant and World Series title back in 2018. He was in the last year of his current deal and now will presumably be at the helm when the Red Sox’s very good trio of prospects Kyle Teel , Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony –get called up.
