Red Sox Nick Pivetta Approaching Career Milestone

The Boston Red Sox (58-50) made a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies (65-44) on August 21st, 2020 that saw the teams swap two pitchers each. The Phillies would receive right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman and right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree while the Red Sox would receive right-handed pitcher Connor Seabold and right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta . Only one of those four pitchers is still in the Majors today.

Pivetta, 31, debuted for the Phillies on April 30th, 2017. Spending the first 3 1/2 seasons of his career with the Phillies, he pitched to a 5.50 ERA across 396 1/3 innings with 421 strikeouts and a 78 ERA+ in 92 games, 71 being starts. After being acquired by the Red Sox, things would go much better for the right-hander.

Through 4 1/2 seasons with the Red Sox, Pivetta holds a 4.36 ERA across 578 innings with 658 strikeouts and a 102 ERA+ in 121 games, 98 being starts. He reached 1,000 career strike outs earlier this season, and there is still one more milestone that he is capable of reaching before the end of 2024.

Pivetta has filled multiple roles throughout his career. Performing as a late-inning shutdown reliever, and a middle-inning mop-up reliever, but mostly he has been a starting pitcher. His starting pitching is what will help him achieve his next milestone.

Pivetta will enter his next start just 25 2/3 innings away from 1,000 career innings pitched. The veteran has appeared in less than 30 games across a full season once in his career, and that may happen again this season, but it should not keep him from reaching the 1,000 innings pitched milestone.
