Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu put the team on his back in an emotional night

During the Boston Red Sox's 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday night at Globe Life Field that secured the series win, Boston's rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu overcame a lot of emotions to put the team on his back.

Abreu found out Saturday night that his grandmother in Venezuela passed away due to an illness that she had been battling. The 25-year-old still showed up to the park ready to play for his teammates and for his grandmother.

In the fourth inning, Abreu smashed a pitch from former Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi for a home run, and when he got back to the dugout, he was overcome with emotion.

In his very next at-bat, despite facing a lefty on the mound, Abreu demolished another ball, this time to right center, for a three-run blast to put Boston up 6-2.

After the game, Abreu spoke to NESN through an interpreter and explained exactly what those moments meant to him.

He also showed gratitude for those around him in Boston's clubhouse.

“I’m grateful for my teammates and I’m grateful for the support they’ve given me,” Abreu said (via. MassLive ). “We’re a family and they showed that today. They showed that I can rely on them and I know they can rely on me as well. So it’s very nice for me to be able to count on them as a family and their support.”
