The Boston Red Sox (60-51) are continuing to make their push for a Wild Card spot in the 2024 postseason. Sitting only 1 1/2 games back of the third Wild Card spot, they may receive a boost to their bullpen on Wednesday.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Chris Davis may be activated from the injured list on Wednesday.

Martin, 38, is with the Major League club in Kansas City. Manager Alex Cora told reporters in Texas on Sunday that Martin was coming along well in his rehab, and that his next step was to take the mound in a game. That was originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday in the minors, but indications now say otherwise.

The Red Sox could use the help out of the bullpen. Entering Tuesday ranked 17th in MLB in bullpen ERA at 4.05, Martin would be welcomed back with open arms.

Before heading to the injured list, Martin pitched scoreless relief outings in 14 of his last 15 appearances. He will return with an ERA this season of 3.42 across 26 1/3 innings with 29 strikeouts and a 130 ERA+ in 26 appearances.

A returning Chris Martin would shore up the back end of the Red Sox bullpen, easing the transition from the starter to the end of the game. Boston has allowed 25 come-from-behind wins this season, five of which have come with Martin on the injured list.

Martin's ability and veteran presence will be a huge boost to Boston's playoff chances down the stretch, potentially giving them the little nudge they need to force their way into October baseball.
