In fact, of the state's four major cities (Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Mobile), Huntsville is the only one that is constantly growing, adding around 10 people each day during the last year (3,534 this year).

Huntsville's total population after a year is presently 225,564 people.

Birmingham lost 246 residents this year, bringing the total population to 196,644 individuals.

Meanwhile, Montgomery lost nearly seven times as many people as Birmingham, with 1,650 leaving, leaving a population of 195,287.

From 2022 to 2023, Mobile shed 695 residents but gained about 20,000 by annexation, elevating it to the second most populous city at around 205,000.

Tuscaloosa, the sixth most populous city in the state, is also expanding. According to the Census, the University of Alabama campus has grown by 760 people to over 111,000. Across the state, Auburn added roughly 2,000 people, bringing it to 82,000 and ranking seventh.
