"The South's Best-Kept Secret Destination," may make you think about a small beach town untouched by corporate America or some charming country community filled with mom-and-pop shops and bed and breakfast inns, but it seems that neither of those fit the bill of who Forbes' chose to wear this title.

“Huntsville offers much more than you might expect, from its intriguing aerospace heritage to a surprisingly vibrant culinary scene and various activities,” writes contributor Jordi Lippe-McGraw. “So if you’re up for a little adventure off the beaten path, Huntsville might just become your new favorite spot.”

She says Huntsville is attractive in its own right, but also makes a great side trip from Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis, or Atlanta.

The largest city in the state, which is still growing rapidly, might surprise its residents by being considered off the main route. Some readers may also be shocked to discover that the Gulf Coast oysters at Sea Salt are described as "a unique delicacy in a landlocked state such as Alabama." We'll choose to view that last statement as an unintentional mistake rather than an unforgivable pun, considering that the author has previously spoken kindly about Mobile on at least one occasion.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center's Adult Space Camp is considered one of Huntsville's top attractions, despite limited availability and a starting cost of $899 per person. It offers a unique experience that makes it worth a visit to the city. The author's admiration for Adult Space Camp is genuine, having recently covered it in an article that suggested it could be the perfect couples' retreat.

Forbes highlights several places of interest, including The Kaffeeklatsch, Pizzelle's Confections, and Baker & Able at the 106 Jefferson Hotel, as well as various parks, museums, and historic sites.
