One home in West Bremerton was destroyed Thursday afternoon, and another significantly damaged, by a fire that took Bremerton Fire Department crews approximately two hours to contain.

The fire started in a home on Fifth Street just south of Naval Avenue at 4:45 p.m., according to BFD Assistant Chief John Payne. The blaze, which is believe to have started in the home's basement, jumped to a neighboring home to the west, which was "significantly damaged," according to Payne, and another to the east, where some exterior damage was done.

Two residents are believed to have been inside the home where the fire began, and both were able to get out of the home, Payne said. In the home to the west that was damaged, no individuals were hurt, and three dogs that were inside were all accounted for safely. The home that was significantly damaged will not be habitable right away, however.

Firefighters from Bremerton Fire Department were joined by those from Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue, South Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Navy Region Northwest.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Payne said, and investigators are at the scene Friday to work on determining the cause.
