Hines gets ‘key to city’ at retirement

After serving as the City of Brewton’s attorney for 19 years, Ed Hines is retiring from the position.
During Monday’s meeting of the Brewton City Council, Mayor Yank Lovelace presented a proclamation in honor of the work Hines has done for the city during his time on the job.
“This meeting marks the last day as city attorney for Ed,” Lovelace said.
In part, the proclamation lauded Hines’ service to the communit since he began the position in January 2005.
“Hines has used reason and logic…to guide two mayors and five elected councils,” Lovelace read.
Hines also accepted a key to the city presented by the Mayor and members of the council Monday.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve,” Hines said after accepting the honor. “I’m gonna miss it.”
Following the recognition of Hines’ retirement, Lovelace announced that attorney Joe Whitt would be taking over the role of city attorney effective immediately.
In other business during Monday’s meeting of the council, action taken included:
• approval of a lease agreement with Neal Land Alabama, Inc., for a portion of O’Bannon Park properties. City Clerk Brooke Hartin said the lease allowed the city to utilize portions of O’Bannon Park owned by the group. “This includes an area around the arena as well as other parts of the park,” Hartin said.
• approved the location of an Angel of Hope Memorial to be erected at Brewton City Park (downtown). The approval is only for location with approval of design to come in the future for council approval, Hartin said. The request for the memorial was made by a local garden club and will move forward with their work on the project. Hartin said the club’s request was to place the memorail near the clock at the park located in downtown Brewton.
