With patriotic music in the background, dozens of area families were on hand Monday for the annual Memorial Day ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 90 in Brewton.
The lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue held the large crowd of patriots for the event.
American Legionnaire Joe Dozier welcomed guests to the ceremony followed by a prayer from Bernie Raines.
“We are hear to honor the men and women whose names are on our podiums here,” Dozier said. “We are here in honor of those who have gone ahead.”
The playing of the National Anthem was coordinated with the raising and lowering of the American Flag by Veterans Dwayne Burnham and Rankin Madden who placed the flag at half-mast in remembrance of those who gave all.
Charles Jackson read the names of those Escambia County soldiers who lost their lives in battles through the years from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict/War and the Global War on Terrorism.

Jackson commented that in the 15 years he has been a part of the ceremony, the 2024 crowd “is the largest I’ve seen.”

The ceremony was concluded with family members representing the deceased soldiers gathering at the monuments on the grounds in honor of their loved ones.
The Rev. Pat Poole, pastor of the East Brewton Methodist Church and Aaron Brewton, a student at Brewton Middle School, closed the ceremony with the playing of Taps.
