Brighton Hungry Duck Run: Local runner wins women's 5K; men's 5K record set

Maddie Brown of Brighton was the only Livingston County overall winner in three races Thursday at the Hungry Duck Run in Brighton.

Brown won the women’s 5-kilometer run in 18 minutes, 58 seconds.

Brown set Brighton High School’s 800-meter record with a time of 2:14.59 as a senior in 2019 before running at Oakland University.

At the front of the 5K, even a record-breaking time by Brighton’s Scott Spaanstra wasn’t enough to take first place overall.

Spaanstra, who just completed his fourth year running for Grand Valley State, took second place with a time of 15:10 that broke the previous course mark of 15:28 set last year by former Brighton teammate Aidan Bustillo .

That time came up just short of first place, which was taken by former Plymouth standout Sean Byrnes in 15:04. Byrnes was the state Division 1 3,200-meter runner-up in 2023 and runs for Butler University.

The top seven finishers broke 16 minutes.

In the half marathon, Aaron King of Greenwood, S.C., won by nearly three minutes over three-time winner Samuel Parlette of White Lake in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 44 seconds.

Emily Kelly of Dexter was the women’s winner and ninth overall in 1:30:01.

In the 10K, Brian Clark of Farmington Hills took first place in 34:09. Erin Ralston of Highland was the first woman and fifth overall in 40:04.

There were 729 total finishers, including 408 in the 5K, 173 in the half marathon and 148 in the 10K.
