Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who murdered George Floyd, has been transferred to a new prison in Oklahoma City.

Chauvin was originally serving his sentence for the 2020 murder of Floyd at a federal prison in Arizona. He is expected to be released in January 2038

However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, he has been moved to an administrative security federal transfer facility in Oklahoma City.

Emery Nelson, of the Bureau of Prisons, says he was transferred to the facility on August 9 but did not explain why.

"For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual, including reasons for transfer," Nelson wrote.

The last time Chauvin was mentioned in the news was after he was stabbed 22 times on November 24 by a fellow inmate in the Arizona prison's law library. Officials will not confirm if this is the cause of his transfer.

John Tursak, 53 , has been charged in U.S. District Court for attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury after stabbing Chauvin. He was originally scheduled to be released in 2026 before the assault.

Chauvin's mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, posted on Facebook that his transfer would not be permanent, writing: "I’m not sure where his permanent state will be. Please be kind as not to post a lot of what/where/why questions on social media."

Note: The details provided in this story are based on law enforcement’s latest version of events, and may be subject to change.
